The greenhouse at Noah's Farm is usually shut down from November to March. In years past, any surviving plants would be moved inside our home in late fall. But in the fall of 2007, with our new bed and breakfast, we decided to leave the plants in the greenhouse over the winter. Ian designed a unique enclosure inside the greenhouse especially for the plants. He set up a portable garage around a cornstove. When it was cold, the plants were closed off from the rest of the greenhouse by being "locked up" inside the portable garage. This saved on propane (our greenhouse is equipped with a large propane furnace) as the whole greenhouse did not need to be heated. And the cornstove produced enough heat to keep the plants inside the portable garage warm. During the daytime, when the greenhouse warmed up sufficiently as a result of solar heat, Ian lifted up the sides of the portable garage to allow light and fresh air to reach the plants. |
