The greenhouse at Noah's Farm is usually shut down from November to March. In years past, any surviving plants would be moved to our home in late fall. But with our new bed and breakfast, we were unable to do that this winter. The plants had to stay out in the greenhouse Ian designed a unique enclosure inside the greenhouse especially for the plants. He set up a portable garage around a cornstove. When it is cold, the plants are closed off from the rest of the greenhouse by being "locked up" inside the portable garage. This saves on propane (our greenhouse is equipped with a large propane furnace) as the whole greenhouse does not need to be heated. And the cornstove produces enough heat to keep the plants inside the portable garage warm. During the daytime, when the greenhouse warms up sufficiently as a result of solar heat, Ian lifts up the sides of the portable garage to allow light and fresh air to reach the plants. |
