The plants inside the portable garage were not the only living residents of
the greenhouse this winter. Ian built a large pen for our two dozen peafowl
chicks. They enjoy their pen and are thriving in it.
Then starting on December 24, kid goats began coming. They came and they
came, sometimes 4-5 a day, during a week-long stretch from Dec. 24-Jan. 1.
Before we knew it, we had 21 newcomers!
It was desperately cold during the holiday season of 2007. Some of the
little ones were born in - 20 celsius temperatures. Ian quickly set up a pen
for mothers and kids in the greenhouse. It turned out to be a lifesaver for
the little goats, who were able to be with their mothers in a comfortably
warm climate (though some had to be brought into the house to spend time
around the woodstove before being reintroduced to their moms).
A pair of angora bunnies as well as a
llama mother and male cria (Stormy)
and an alpaca mother and female
cria (Honey) also found refuge in the
greenhouse.
